Abstract. The syntaxonomic diversity of forest vegetation of the class Alnetea glutinosae is presented based on the analysis of original data. The class is represented by one association. The composition and structure of forest vegetation were studied during route and stationary studies on sample plots. The analysis included 40 complete geobotanical descriptions. Vegetation classification was based on the principles and methodological approaches of ecological-floristic classification. Forests of Alnus glutinosa are not widespread in the landscapes of the western slopes of the Volga Upland, confined to the floodplains of small rivers, as well as localities directly adjacent to the water’s edge. In the composition of forest coenofloras, species of wetland ECG dominate both in the number of species and in the total projective cover, nitrophilic ones codominate, the participation of the polyzonal complex with a predominance of Mediterranean-boreal species is high.
Keywords: Alnetea glutinosae, western slopes of the Volga Upland, forest-steppe, black alder forests
