Abstract. Plant communities of coastal marshes are formed by true halophytes or halotolerant species, which replace each other with increasing distance from the sea. The aim of our work was to conduct an ecological–floristic classification of vegetation in the coastal marshes of Sakhalin Island. Geobotanical studies were carried out in the summer of 2023-2025 in three locations in the southern part of Sakhalin Island: in the upper reaches of the Aniva Gulf, at the mouth of the Mereya River, and on Lebyazhye Lake. Data processing was performed in Juice 7.1 and Microsoft Excel 2013. The syntaxonomic survey was carried out using the J. Braun-Blanquet’s approach; the names of the new syntaxa were given in accordance with the International Code of Phytosociological Nomenclature. The conducted study and classification of the herbaceous vegetation of coastal marshes in the southern part of Sakhalin Island allowed us to identify communities of 3 classes, which are assigned to 7 orders, 7 unions, 10 associations, 3 subassociations, and one unranked syntaxon. 2 associations and one union are new, previously not described in the literature. The vegetation of coastal marshes in the southern part of Sakhalin Island has many common syntaxa with marsh meadows of the Russian Arctic; however, there are differences due to regional features of the species composition of the grass stand. The new syntaxa are included in the corresponding classes.
